Baby moose stuck in skate park bowl in Colorado mountain town

UPDATE: The moose has been rescued. The moose was sedated and pulled out of the bowl with a winch. Authorities stuck around until sedation wore off and he was able to stand on his own, also keeping an eye on “the little skater moose” until he was reunited with his mother.

Authorities in Breckenridge are asking members of the public to avoid the skate park area at the local recreation center until further notice after a young moose was discovered to be stuck in the concrete bowl feature.

“Mom is nearby and it’s making her very anxious that she can’t get to her baby,” reads a notice on the matter. “Let’s give the mama and baby space until Colorado Parks and Wildlife can safely handle it.”

Images from the scene capture the moose at the bottom of the bowl area on a pile of fallen leaves.

While this situation will likely soon be remedied – hopefully even by the time you’re reading this (expect updates to be posted here) – the situation highlights how wildlife can get stuck in human-built terrain and items.

There’s not much that members of the public can do to prevent a scenario like this, but the situation can still serve as a reminder to ensure that your own property doesn’t include potential traps. Keep window wells covered, pools covered and fenced in, and remove netting (soccer nets, basketball hoops) that could result in animals to getting stuck.

With Halloween underway and Christmas around the corner, yard decorations can become a key concern when it comes to wildlife entanglement. As you’re decorating this year, keep that in mind, and aim to use animal-friendly decor.
