One dead after car crashes into river in Denver metro

A car crashed into the South Platte River at East 58th and York Street in the Denver area on Sunday evening just after 5:30 p.m., leaving one dead.

According to a Facebook post from the Adams County Fire Rescue, the Honda CRV was traveling at a “high rate of speed” when it went into the river and landed upside down in the water. Bystanders had reportedly pulled the driver, a 22-year-old male from Denver, out of the water while crews arrived. The driver was the only occupant of the vehicle.

The driver was taken to a local hospital but sadly did not survive.

According to a press release from Colorado State Patrol, the investigation shows that the Honda was traveling eastbound on East 58th Ave. and crossed the westbound lanes, going off the left side of the road. The car reportedly struck a wooden post guardrail, continued forward, and came to a rest on its roof in the river.

CSP asks anyone who witnessed the crash and has not spoken to investigators to contact Colorado State Patrol dispatch at 303-239-4501.
