Record heat continues this weekend, relief arrives Tuesday

heat - Confluence Park

It is hot outside, in case you didn’t notice. The problem is this heat isn’t going away for a few more days.

Our scorching heat wave continues today, with high temperatures spiking into the low 100s in Denver and yet another daily record likely to fall. After Friday’s record high of 102°, we’ll likely hit another 102° again on this Saturday, which would break the daily record of 100° last set in 2003. Boulder and Fort Collins (record highs: 97°) are also likely to smash their daily records.

A Heat Advisory runs from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. both days this weekend for most of eastern Colorado, including the entire Denver metro area.

On top of the heat, there’s an Air Quality Advisory for ground ozone for Saturday, but you’ll probably also notice some wildfire smoke moving in from the Pacific Northwest wildfires later in the day as well. That smoke shouldn’t be especially thick, but it will be noticeable, especially along and north of I-70 in the high country. That smoke will probably hang around for Sunday as well.

For your Bastille Day celebrations on Sunday, it looks hot once again with a high around 102°, which would break yet another daily record high. However, we’ll see a few more clouds and a slight chance for a gusty afternoon shower or storm in Denver, and a better chance for afternoon storms in the high country.

Sweet relief starts to arrive on Monday with a weak front and added cloud cover, but highs still reach the mid-to-upper 90s. It’s not until Tuesday that a much better chance for storms arrives, with widespread afternoon storms and a high dropping to around 90°.

We’ll be far more seasonable with daily storm chances and a high in the upper 80s to lower 90s the rest of next week. Until then, be cautious with this extreme heat – and be extra careful with anything with a spark outdoors with conditions like these!
