Guide to visiting Ouray: The town dubbed the ‘Switzerland of America’ for good reason
Located among the stunning San Juan Mountains, Ouray is nicknamed the “Switzerland of America” – and for good reason. The town has an abundance of jagged mountain peaks and striking waterfalls to explore, also playing host to plenty of activities as well, including via ferrata routes in the summer and the Ouray Ice Park in the winter.
History:
According to ColoradoInfo, the first humans to inhabit what is now Ouray were the Ute Indians. The Ute used the area to fish and hunt during summer months. That changed in 1873, however, when Chief Ouray signed a treaty that released the San Juan territory to settlers.
Ouray was incorporated in 1876 and named in honor of Chief Ouray.
Ouray quickly grew into a booming mining town, but like many Colorado mining towns of the day, once mining declined, the area ultimately shifted to tourism to stay afloat. The town eventually grew into the well-known mountain destination it is known to be today.
