Damage from severe storm results in significant road closures at popular Colorado park

Access into a hugely popular recreation spot in Colorado Springs has been largely cut off after severe Saturday storms resulted in wide-ranging impacts.

According to Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation, & Culture Services, both North Cheyenne Canyon Road and Gold Camp Road have been closed in North Cheyenne Cañon Park. Images show major road washout and rockfall. Per a report from the agency, lots of scree and debris was moved onto North Cheyenne Canyon Road during the storm, with major storm-related road damage identified on Gold Camp.

With the closure of these roads, some of the most popular outdoor recreation spots in Colorado Springs, including Mount Cutler, Seven Bridges, and Helen Hunt Falls, are mostly inaccessible with the exception of long round-about trails. Whether or not the area is also closed to hikers and bikers who enter the park via the city’s interconnected trail system was not addressed, though the OutThere Colorado team has reached out for clarification. Either way, the roads are closed to all travelers.

At last report, there’s no estimated time for reopening of the roads. A June 7 announcement about the closure indicated that crews were in the process of assessing the impacts and working to clear affected areas.
