Denver Recreation Centers will begin to reopen starting May 3

Denver Parks and Recreation announced Thursday evening its plans to gradually reopen Denver Recreation Centers, pools, registered programs and other activities beginning on May 3.

Weight room and cardio spaces at three of DPR’s 30 recreation centers — Madison, Eisenhower and Green Valley Ranch — will reopen to fitness enthusiasts on May 3.

DPR is requiring all individuals wanting to use their facility to make a $2 reservation for a one-hour block. In between each block, employees will clean and sanitize each station, DPR officials said in a release.

“We are elated to begin reopening some of our facilities and registered programming,” said Happy Haynes, the executive director of DPR.

“Our employees have gone above and beyond in preparing plans for a safe reopening to provide the community with quality amenities and healthy recreation opportunities in neighborhoods throughout the city.”

Other in-person activities will resume and be offered at Cook Park, Hiawatha Davis Jr., Highland, and the Platt Park Recreation Centers. Prices will vary depending on the activity and reservations are required.

MY Denver — the city’s library and recreation card — will also resume, while the Tasty Food Meal Program will continue to offer afternoon meals to people between the ages of 5 and 18 during the week.

During a second phase of reopening that is scheduled to begin on June 7, three additional fitness centers — Athmar, Montclair and Rude — will reopen to the public, but still require reservations.

Additionally, eight of the city’s outdoor pools will reopen for casual swimmers and those wanting to learn on the same date. Individuals wishing to use the outdoor pool will be required to reserve a 90-minute time slot that will open to the public on May 31.

Lap swim, open swim and aqua fitness centers reservations will be offered.

Summers in the Parks and undisclosed Sports Camps will also resume on June 7.

A little more than two months later on Aug. 16, the third phase of DPR’s reopening will begin as nine indoor pools and four additional fitness centers will open to the public.

Beside the fitness center and indoor pools, registered programs at Aztlan, Barnum, Harvard, Harvey, St. Charles and Swansea Recreation Centers will resume in-person programs.

In October, at the beginning of Quarter 4, DPR is anticipating to reopen the ten remaining centers to the public that have been closed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
