4 minors arrested after allegedly firing at Aurora police officers

Aurora vehicle pursuit

Aurora police have released more information regarding the Thursday night pursuit that led to the arrest of four minors.

Police initially responded to a call of a burglary in the 24200 block of East Mexico Avenue around 8 p.m. Thursday evening. A victim claimed that their gray Kia Sportage had been stolen from their garage. The victim was tracking the vehicle via GPS, according to a press release from the Aurora Police Department.

Uniformed Aurora officers in an unmarked vehicle spotted the Kia around 9 p.m. near 17th Avenue and Trenton Street in Denver. The officers followed the vehicle to the area of 21st Avenue and Ulster Street before “multiple” shots were fired from the Kia at the police vehicle, police said.

One round struck the police vehicle and two rounds struck unoccupied parked cars. No one was injured in the incident.

Officers took cover during the shooting and didn’t return fire. As they covered, the Kia sped away, leading to a pursuit that traveled through Denver, Green Valley Ranch and Aurora. Aurora and Denver police officers were involved in the pursuit.

The pursuit eventually ended when the suspect vehicle blew out a tire in the 1700 block of Cathay Court. Multiple suspects then ran from the car, police said.

Both Aurora and Denver police conducted a search, leading to the arrest of four minors. Initially, it was reported that one of the suspects was an adult.

One of the suspects is 15 years old and the other three suspects are 16. One suspect is a resident of Denver. Three others are residents of Aurora, police said.

Investigators found over 20 shell casings from three different scenes believed to be fired at police by the suspects, as well as multiple firearms.

“The Aurora Police Department does not and will not tolerate acts of violence committed against the men and women who are dedicated to keeping our community safe, and that includes our law enforcement, fire and emergency medical service partners here and throughout the metro area” Aurora Acting Deputy Chief Chris Juul said. “As evidenced by the substantial, multi-agency response to last night’s attack on our officers, we will dedicate all our resources to ensure those who are responsible are identified, captured and successfully prosecuted.”

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867.
