Lafayette police officer faces careless driving charges in two-vehicle crash
A Lafayette police officer collided with another vehicle while responding to a separate incident Saturday night, causing minor injuries and leading to charges against the officer.
At around 6:31 p.m., the police officer, in a Chevy Silverado, crashed into a Toyota Camry at U.S. Highway 287 and W. South Boulder Road in Lafayette on Saturday night, according to a Colorado State Patrol news release.
Authorities requested CSP to investigate the officer-involved crash scene.
The police officer was responding to a different rollover crash near Exempla and U.S. Highway 287 before striking the Toyota at W. South Boulder Road, according to CSP.
A CSP spokesperson said the Toyota was traveling eastbound on South Boulder Road, before colliding with the front of the officer’s vehicle at the intersection with U.S. Highway 287.
Authorities said the Lafayette officer was driving with emergency lights and sirens at the time of the crash. The officer suffered minor injuries and was transported to the hospital.
Meanwhile, the driver of the Toyota complained of minor injuries at the scene but declined to be transported by ambulance, according to CSP officials.
On Sunday afternoon, a CSP spokesperson said the officer was charged with careless driving causing injury. It remains unclear whether the officer ran a red light during the crash.
The officer-involved crash remains under investigation by CSP.
