The Boulder County coroner’s office on Tuesday identified a hiker who died this month on Boulder’s Flatirons.

The body of the hiker, who was reported overdue, was recovered Dec. 18 near the Third Flatiron, according to the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office. This was the second death on Boulder’s Flatirons in a week.

On Tuesday, the coroner’s office identified him as Henry Smith, 27.

Smith was reported missing by a family member Dec. 18 after he failed to return home the day before, according to the sheriff’s office. Smith was last known to be “scrambling” near the Third Flatiron, the sheriff’s office said.

The sheriff’s office found the Smith’s vehicle near the Gregory Canyon trailhead and started a search operation. The Boulder Emergency Squad used drones to search the area and located the man’s body in a remote area, the sheriff’s office said.

The recovery required expertise from the Rocky Mountain Rescue Group and took about 8.5 hours, according to the sheriff’s office.

On Dec. 16, the body of a 42-year-old man was found on a rock ledge after someone called to report that he failed to return from a hike near the Second Flatiron just outside Boulder.
