Adams County woman convicted of killing boyfriend

Ashley White

A 17th Judicial District jury convicted a 29-year-old woman on Tuesday of murdering her boyfriend in 2020.

After a three-week trial, the Adams County jury convicted Ashley White of second-degree murder, conspiracy to commit second-degree murder and robbery in connection to the death of Cody DeLisa, 28, on Aug. 11, 2020, according to a press release from the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

In the months leading up to the murder, White and DeLisa had a “volatile” relationship, according to police. DeLisa often criticized White for being unemployed.

White wrote in her diary that she regretted ever meeting DeLisa and her overall frustration hit a tipping point after an incident in which she attempted to drown and burn DeLisa’s cat, according to the release.

On the day of the murder, White texted DeLisa about a job interview while riding the bus home. DeLisa stated that he did not believe she would get the job, which upset White.

White met a man on the bus that introduced himself as Scott. Scott asked White if she was dating a man who had raped her. White said she was, and Scott replied that they must kill him with Scott’s gun.

The two walked to White’s residence in the 6000 block of 80th Avenue — in the Dupont neighborhood — and introduced Scott to DeLisa as White’s brother from Texas, according to the release.

The duo shot DeLisa two times in the head and left the scene. DeLisa was not found until the Adams County Sheriff’s Office did a welfare check the next day.

White and Scott spent a few days in the area before Scott left, never speaking with White again. White was later identified and arrested by the sheriff’s office on Aug. 16.

Three years later, a woman claiming to be the girlfriend of a man named Michael Stratton called detectives, telling them that she believed Stratton helped in the murder of DeLisa.

Stratton’s description matched White’s story about her accomplice, Scott, but Stratton was already in custody on a first-degree murder charge in Pueblo for a separate murder that occurred 19 days after DeLisa’s on Aug. 30.

Stratton has been deemed incompetent to stand trial in the Pueblo case. He has not been charged in connection with DeLisa’s murder in Adams County, according to the district attorney’s office.

“This was a tragic and senseless murder and Ashley White bears significant culpability for it,” District Attorney Brian Mason said in the release. “Her callous actions led to the victim’s death and now she will pay a significant price.”

White is scheduled to be sentenced on April 4.
