Adams County deputy hit twice by driver during chase

An Adams County Sheriff’s deputy was injured but not hospitalized after he was hit twice by an erratic driver who fled a traffic stop Thursday evening.

The deputy was first hit in the leg by the suspect’s car while he was on foot, according to a news release from the Adams County Sheriff’s Office. He was then in a patrol car that the suspect ran head-on into later in the chase.

Another co-responder inside the patrol vehicle during that collision also did not need transport to the hospital, according to the release. The initial stop took place at the intersection of Corona Street and Essex Drive, just south of Thornton, at 5:18 p.m. Thursday.

The suspect, identified as 33-year-old Jason Lutz, was arrested after the incident on suspicion of several offenses, including first-degree assault on a peace officer, vehicular eluding and violation of a protection order, according to the release.

Before the stop, police observed Lutz driving erratically and thought he may be impaired, according to the release. During the stop, Lutz fired a handgun several times into the air and fled the scene. During the ensuing chase, he threw that gun out of his car’s window before deputies lost sight of him.

While deputies were finding the handgun at the scene, Lutz drove back, prompting authorities to again try to take him into custody, according to the release. He again fled the scene, firing more shots into the air.

The deputy then found Lutz’s vehicle and told him to stop; Lutz then drove around the patrol car, hitting that deputy in the leg before again driving away, according to the release. He continued into the area of Nueva Vista Drive and Jolene Circle, where he turned his vehicle around in a cul-de-sac.

At that moment, Lutz drove head-on into the following patrol car, and deputies were finally able to take him into custody, according to the release. Officers also found another gun inside his vehicle.

The 17th Judicial District’s Office will file the official charges against Lutz in the coming days.
