Power restored after outage impacts Denver airport trains, 195k customers Sunday

A power outage in southeast metro Denver was restored Sunday evening after halting the Denver International Airport trains and leaving 195,000 customers without electricity.

In a statement provided to The Denver Gazette’s news partners 9NEWS Sunday night, Xcel said just before 3 p.m. Sunday, a transformer failed at an Xcel substation, resulting in damage to other equipment. The failure and damage caused an outage that cascaded to include other substations.

“It was that big, big like a sonic boom. It was like ‘boom!’ The whole house kind of shook. And since we live right on the corner, you could really feel it,” Aurora resident Charlie Anderson told 9NEWS. “And then, about a half hour later, another one happened.”

Airport officials announced in a social media post on X that DIA “experienced a power incident” Sunday afternoon. Officials worked to get the trains, and other systems, back online.

“DEN operations are back to normal,” the airport said in an update around 5 p.m. Sunday. “We are still conducting our own investigation but it appears the occurrence was propagated by the current large power outages with Xcel Energy. We want to thank our passengers for their patience.”

Meanwhile, more than 44,000 CORE Electric Co-op customers were without power in Arapahoe, Douglas and Elbert Counties. Thousands of Intermountain Rural Electric (IREA) customers in Douglas County, including Parker, were experiencing outages.

Parker police said their emergency and non-emergency lines were down as a result of the outage, and 911 calls were being forwarded to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. As of 4:20 p.m., emergency lines were operational again, the department said.

The Regional Transportation District said service on the H and R rail lines was impacted. Regular service resumed by Sunday evening.
