Man found dead on 14,259-foot Longs Peak identified as 41-year-old
On July 8, the Boulder County Coroner’s Office identified the man who was found dead on Longs Peak on July 5 as 41-year-old Jeffrey Carlin.
According to prior reporting, Carlin was on Kiener’s Route when he was found. Details related to his cause of death have not been released.
While most climb 14,259-foot Longs Peak via the more popular Class 3 Keyhole Route, Kiener’s Route is a 5.4/5.5-rated route that travels up the mountain’s east face, generally linking Lamb’s Slide to Broadway Ledge to Upper Kiener’s. While it’s the easiest route up the east face and is described as an “entry level route into intermediate alpine climbing,” the American Alpine Institute notes that it “should not be taken lightly.”
After Carlin was found deceased, the route was closed overnight, reopening the next morning following recovery operations.
Condolences go out to those impacted by Carlin’s death.
