Denver police officer arrested in Jefferson County on Friday

A Denver police officer is facing felony eluding and reckless endangerment charges after he was arrested Friday in Jefferson County, according a Denver Police Department news release.

It’s the second time a Denver police officer was arrested this week for different reasons. This time, the police officer is facing a felony offense.

In a news release, DPD officials said Officer Christopher Thomas was arrested Friday afternoon in Jefferson County on suspicion of felony eluding and reckless endangerment.

DPD didn’t release any further information about what led to Thomas’ arrest.

Police said Thomas joined DPD in 2021 and was recently assigned to District One patrol. He is now suspended without pay as the case goes through the judicial process, according to DPD.

The department will conduct an administrative review of the alleged incident “once the criminal case is adjudicated,” police said, adding the process includes the Denver Department of Safety and the Office of the Independent Monitor civilian oversight agency.

The Colorado State Patrol is conducting the criminal investigation against Thomas.

“The Denver Police Department is committed to transparency and accountability,” the agency said in its release.

“When a Denver Police officer is arrested, DPD works to proactively share information in a timely manner, when possible,” they said.

On Wednesday night, Arvada police arrested DPD Officer Cody Haggard on suspicion of a simple assault related to a domestic disturbance, according to Denver police.

Since Haggard faces a misdemeanor charge, the department moved him to an off-line role, instead of Officer Thomas, who is suspended without pay while facing a felony charge.

Thomas is the fifth arrest of a Denver-area law enforcement officer in the past three months.

An Aurora police officer was fired on Monday after his own domestic violence arrest the previous week. In October, a Denver Sheriff’s Department deputy was arrested on suspicion of menacing and child abuse in Colorado Springs.

At the end of September, a Denver police officer was fired after repeatedly asking a domestic violence victim out on a date. That same week, a Denver deputy was arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting a former county jail inmate.
