Two Denver sheriff’s deputies arrested on suspicion of assaulting at-risk adult

Two Denver sheriff’s deputies were arrested Thursday on suspicion of felony assault of an at-risk adult.

Sgt. Carla Gentempo and Deputy Jason Gentempo were arrested by Denver police on suspicion of third-degree assault, a class six felony, according to a Thursday news release from the Denver Sheriff’s Department.

The charges appear to stem from an assault call on Oct. 17, during which the victim, a man using a wheelchair, reported that two people punched him in the head and drove away in a white truck, according to a heavily redacted affidavit for Jason Gentempo’s arrest.

The victim told investigators that he had arranged to meet people at his apartment, had given them the address and waited outside for them on his porch with his dog, according to the affidavit. His relation to the suspects is either redacted or not mentioned in the document.

When two people, later identified as Jason and Carla Gentempo, arrived, they told the victim to put the dog inside; as soon as he did, the two began punching him and stomped on his phone, according to the affidavit. The victim told investigators he was knocked out of his wheelchair and hit his head on the ground. The two then left in the truck.

The victim told police he has a permanent disability after a car crash a decade ago, according to the affidavit. Investigators gave Jason Gentempo the opportunity to explain his side of the story and, upon consulting with his attorney, he declined to.

Both were placed on investigative leave from the department as part of their arrest, according to the release. The investigation will be conducted by the Public Integrity Division under the oversight of the Office of the Independent Monitor.

Carla Gentempo became a deputy in 2010 and was assigned to the administration division, according to the release. Jason Gentempo became a deputy in 2005, and was assigned to the Downtown Detention Center.
