Man at Keystone Resort dies in police custody after traffic stop
A man wanted on three outstanding warrants died soon after police arrested him at Keystone Resort on Monday.
The 43-year-old man, who police are not currently publicly identifying, died an hour after he was placed into handcuffs around 1:15 p.m. Monday, despite refusing medical attention, according to a Tuesday news release from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.
The man was first pulled over during a traffic stop by Dillon Keystone Police on Sunday morning for driving without a license plate, according to the release. When asked to provide a license and registration, he drove away from the scene. Officers did not chase after him.
Police then found the man’s vehicle parked at the Keystone Ski Resort on Monday, according to the release. He was seen leaving the resort, abandoning the car near Keystone employee housing, and then was tracked by a police drone camera about a half mile south in the area of the Sunrise Employee Housing Apartment.
An officer then found him hiding inside a random pick-up truck around 1:14 p.m. and ordered the suspect to surrender, according to the release. He complied and was placed in handcuffs a minute later.
Police said they did not use physical force during the arrest and the man told them he did not need medical attention, according to the release. Despite the refusal, officers called an ambulance and administered Narcan as they thought the man was experiencing a drug overdose.
The man was taken by ambulance to the St. Anthony Summit Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:16 p.m., according to the release.
The bureau is investigating the death and is not releasing any more information at this time.
