Man arrested for attempted murder after DougCo carjacking, chase
Authorities arrested a man in connection with a carjacking and ensuing chase through Highlands Ranch Monday night that left a sheriff’s deputy “bloodied and bruised.”
Daniel Reynaldo Tolentino, 43, faces charges of attempted first-degree murder of a peace officer, aggravated robbery and felony menacing after he allegedly robbed a car from a car wash and shot at police attempting to catch him, according to a Thursday news release by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.
“It is a miracle that our deputies were not killed. I am proud of both deputies who faced extreme danger,” Sheriff Darren Weekly said in the release. “Despite being shot at and rammed by the suspect’s vehicle, our injured deputy stayed in the fight and helped arrest the suspect.”
Police were first notified of the carjacking just before 8:30 p.m. Monday, when a caller reported that he was at a car wash near the intersection of South Broadway and Panama Drive when he was approached by Tolentino, who was carrying a gun, according to the release. The victim gave Tolentino his keys and was uninjured.
Using a Flock camera, deputies found the suspect driving the stolen vehicle in the area of Highlands Ranch in about 10 minutes and began chasing him, according to the release. During the chase, Tolentino shot at deputies through the windshield of the stolen car. One officer returned fire.
The chase ended in a Littleton mobile home park near County Line Road and Santa Fe Drive, when law enforcement used their vehicles to pin Tolentino in the stolen car, Weekly said during a news conference earlier in the week.
One deputy was also rammed and suffered an injury consistent with a bullet grazing during the incident, according to the release. That deputy was hospitalized after the chase and is now at home and expected to make a full recovery.
Weekly added during the initial news conference that the deputy was “bloodied and bruised,” but did not sustain any significant injuries.
Police also took a passenger in the stolen vehicle into custody for outstanding warrants unrelated to the incident, according to the release.
