Aurora police fired shots during an attempted arrest near Expo Park on Thursday afternoon, leading to a suspect being injured.

There was a large police presence in the 300 block of South Ironton Street, near the intersection of East Alameda Avenue and South Havana Street, around 11:30 a.m. Thursday, according to a social media post from the Aurora Police Department (APD).

The APD SWAT team and the Denver Police Department’s Fugitive Unit were attempting to arrest a fugitive who was wanted for attempted homicide in Denver, APD Division Chief of Operations Kevin Barnes said during a press conference.

Officers tailed the suspect’s vehicle to the residence at 384 South Ironton Street, Barnes said. SWAT then attempted to take the suspect into custody, leading to the shooting.

One officer fired shots during the incident, the department said, and the male suspect was transported to a nearby hospital with injuries. The suspect was reported in stable condition.

No officers were harmed during the incident.

The SWAT officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave, as per protocol, while the 18th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team investigates.

The identity of the suspect was not released by ADP, with investigators noting that the situation is still under investigation. The department does not know his connection to the residence in which he stopped.

The suspect was wanted for an attempted homicide that occurred in Denver on May 5, Barnes said.

The officer-involved shooting marks the seventh in the metro Denver area since April 29.

The shootings have included the Englewood, Aurora, Lakewood and Thornton police departments and the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office.

Thornton Police Department officers have been involved in two shootings since April 30.
